Mount Laurel Travel Baseball tryouts for the upcoming season are now open for players in the 8U through 11U age divisions. Evaluation sessions determine placement on District or Tournament teams, offering competitive play and player development in a supportive environment. Register today to secure your spot for the upcoming year.

As the leaves begin to turn and the air gets crisp in Mount Laurel, NJ, the buzz of baseball season never truly fades. For young athletes in our community, the transition from recreational play to Travel baseball represents a significant milestone in their athletic journey. It is a time of growth, new friendships, and the thrill of representing our town on the diamond. Our organization is dedicated to fostering a love for the game while providing a structured path for players to sharpen their skills. Whether your child is looking to step onto the travel field for the first time or is a returning veteran of the 11U circuit, this year’s tryouts are designed to be a fair, transparent, and encouraging experience for everyone involved.

What is the Mt. Laurel Travel Baseball tryout process?

The tryout process is designed to be a comprehensive assessment of a player's current skill set, physical literacy, and coachability. We understand that tryouts can be nerve-wracking for young athletes, which is why our evaluators and coaches work hard to create an environment that feels like a standard practice session while still maintaining a high level of scrutiny. Each player in the 8U through 11U divisions will rotate through several stations where they will be observed by independent evaluators and experienced coaching staff.

The evaluation typically covers several core disciplines of the game. First, players are assessed on their defensive capabilities, including their footwork in the infield, their ability to track fly balls in the outfield, and the strength and accuracy of their throwing arm. Next, we move to the hitting tunnels or onto the field for batting practice, where evaluators look at mechanics, timing, and the ability to make consistent contact. Finally, we look at base running and general athletic agility. Our goal is not just to find the best players today, but to identify those with the potential and drive to develop throughout the season.

Following the conclusion of the tryout sessions, the coaching committee reviews the scores and notes for every participant. This data-driven approach ensures that team placements are based on merit and the specific needs of the roster. We take this responsibility seriously, knowing that every child is at a different stage of their development. If you are unsure which age group your child falls into, please consult our Age Eligibility Chart to ensure you are registering for the correct session.

District Team vs. Tournament Team: Understanding the Split

One of the unique aspects of the Mt. Laurel Travel Baseball program is our dual-team structure for the 8U-11U age groups. By offering both a District Team and a Tournament Team, we are able to provide a competitive home for a wider range of talented players. This structure allows us to tailor the level of competition and the intensity of the schedule to the specific needs of the players in each group.

District Team: This team typically focuses on local league play and represents Mount Laurel in regional Cal Ripken or similar district-level competitions in addition to participating in various tournaments both local and extended travel.
Tournament Team: This team often takes on a more tournament driven schedule, participating in multiple weekend tournaments that may require travel across the state or region.
Roster Placement: Placement is determined by tryout performance, with the top-ranked players generally being invited to the District Team.
Skill Development: Both teams receive the same high-level coaching and access to our Facilities , ensuring that every player has the tools they need to improve.
Commitment Level: Both teams require a serious commitment that may involve additional weekend travel and practice time.

How do I register for 8U-11U travel baseball tryouts?

Registration for this year's tryouts is handled exclusively through our online portal. To get started, parents should visit the Tryouts page on our website, where you will find the specific dates and times for each age bracket. It is important to register early to allow our staff to plan the evaluation stations and ensure we have a sufficient number of evaluators on hand. The registration process includes a brief medical waiver and a confirmation of your residency within the Mount Laurel service area.

When you Register , you will be asked to provide your child's previous baseball experience. This information helps our coaches organize the tryout groups more effectively. If you are new to the world of competitive baseball, we highly recommend reading our New Baseball Parents Guide to understand the expectations for the season, including equipment requirements and the time commitment involved for both players and families. Being prepared before you even step onto the field for tryouts can significantly reduce stress and help your child focus on their performance.

Essential Preparation for Youth Baseball Evaluations

Preparation for tryouts starts long before the first whistle blows. We encourage players to spend time in the weeks leading up to the evaluation getting "baseball ready." This doesn't mean you need to be in mid-season form, but a basic level of conditioning and skill refinement can make a big difference. For 8U and 9U players, this might just mean playing catch in the backyard or visiting a local batting cage. For older players in the 10U and 11U divisions, focusing on specific mechanics like transitions and lead-offs (if applicable) can provide a competitive edge. One option we can recommend it the Back-To-School clinic that is run by former college players, you can register here .

Mindset is perhaps the most important part of preparation. We look for players who are "coachable"—meaning they listen to instructions, hustle between stations, and support their fellow athletes. A player who makes a mistake but immediately recovers with a positive attitude often scores higher with our evaluators than a player who shows frustration. We want to build teams of resilient athletes who love the game. Make sure your child understands that tryouts are just one day and that the organization's goal is to find the best fit for their current development level.

What should players expect on the day of tryouts?

On the days of the evaluation, players should arrive at the field at least 15 minutes early. This time is crucial for checking in, receiving a tryout number, and warming up their arms. A proper warm-up prevents injury and ensures that the player's first throw to a scout isn't their first throw of the day. Once the session begins, players will be divided into small groups to rotate through the following stations:

Timed Home-to-First Sprints: To measure pure speed and explosive power out of the batter's box.
Infield Fungo: Taking ground balls at shortstop or third base and throwing across the diamond to first base.
Outfield Drills: Fielding fly balls and demonstrating the ability to hit the cutoff man with accuracy.
Live Hitting: Facing a pitching machine or coach-pitch to evaluate bat speed, contact quality, and swing mechanics.
Catcher/Pitcher Bullpens: For those interested in these specialized positions, a separate evaluation of arm strength and technique is conducted.

Throughout these drills, coaches will be looking for hustle. Whether it’s running to pick up a loose ball or jogging to the next station, effort is a non-negotiable trait for Mt. Laurel Travel Baseball. We expect all players to adhere to our Rules and Policy regarding conduct on and off the field. This professionalism starts at tryouts and continues through the final game of the summer.

Building Skills in a Supportive Environment

Our philosophy at Mt. Laurel is that winning is a byproduct of great development. We aren't just looking for the biggest hitters; we are looking for the hardest workers. By providing two distinct tiers of play—District and Tournament—we ensure that every child is playing against competition that will challenge them without overwhelming them. This balance is critical for maintaining a child’s interest in the sport for years to come. We also encourage families to explore Sponsorship opportunities to help support our mission of keeping youth sports accessible and high-quality for all Mount Laurel residents.

Additionally, this role allows you to serve as a mentor to younger players in our program. You become a visible leader on the field, ensuring that games are played fairly and safely. This level of involvement looks incredible on college applications and future resumes, showing that you are a contributor to your community.

This training is designed to build your confidence so that when the first pitch is thrown, you feel ready to command the field. Expectations for Umpires During the Season

Being a Mount Laurel Baseball Umpire is a job that requires a high level of professionalism. We expect our officials to arrive at the Facilities at least 15 to 20 minutes before game time. This allows you to check in with the coaches, inspect the field for any safety hazards, and ensure the game starts on time.

Appearance is also key. While we provide guidance on the necessary gear, umpires are expected to dress appropriately in the designated umpire uniform. This usually includes a navy blue or black polo shirt, grey slacks, and the necessary protective equipment if you are working behind the plate. Looking the part helps establish your authority on the field and earns the respect of the players and spectators alike.

Furthermore, we expect our umpires to be students of the game. Even after training, reviewing the MLB Eligibility Guidelines and staying updated via Club News will help you become the best official possible. Remember, you represent Mount Laurel Baseball every time you step on the field!

What ages and divisions do new umpires officiate?

New umpires in our program typically start by officiating games for our younger divisions, specifically players aged 7 through 12. This range allows you to get comfortable with the pace of the game in a supportive environment. You will find that these age groups are full of energy and excitement, making the games fun to work.

You can learn more about the specific structure of these games on our Divisions page. Officiating for these levels provides a great balance; the games are competitive enough to keep you sharp, but they also emphasize development and learning for both the players and the officials.

Working with the 7–12 age group is particularly rewarding because you see the foundational skills of baseball being built in real-time. You are the one who ensures that a 9-year-old’s first home run is officially recognized or that a close play at first base is called with accuracy and fairness. Your presence makes the experience better for everyone involved.

Developing Essential Life Skills Through Sports Officiating

Many of our former umpires credit the program with helping them develop their public speaking and leadership abilities. When you are a Mount Laurel Baseball Umpire, you are required to speak loudly and clearly so the entire field hears your calls. This helps overcome shyness and builds a presence that carries over into the classroom and other social settings.

You also learn the value of objective observation. In the heat of a game, it is easy for emotions to run high. An umpire’s job is to remain the calmest person on the field. You learn to filter out the noise and focus on the facts of the play. This ability to stay objective is a vital skill in any career, whether you eventually go into law, business, education, or medicine.

Moreover, the program fosters a sense of community. You will meet other teens from across Mount Laurel who share your interests, creating a network of peers who are all working toward the same goal of supporting local youth sports. It’s not just a job; it’s a way to grow as a person while giving back to the town that has supported your own athletic journey.

How much can you earn as a local youth umpire?

One of the most common questions we get is about the compensation. We are proud to offer a competitive rate of $40 per game. For a teen who works just three games a week, that’s an extra $120 in your pocket! Because our games are usually held in the evenings and on weekends, the schedule is incredibly flexible, allowing you to balance work with your own schoolwork and sports commitments.

We will work with you to accomodate your schedule and ours. We do not schedule umpires unless they express they are able to attend the full game.

It is also worth noting that many of our umpires find they can work multiple games on a Saturday or Sunday, significantly increasing their weekend earnings. If you are diligent and reliable, there is plenty of opportunity to pick up extra shifts throughout the spring and fall seasons.

Why this is the perfect job for baseball-loving teens
